Nickel Creek Coming To Louisville

On November 10th. I had the great pleasure of seeing them on Monday night at the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center. It was a phenomenal show. The opening act was "The Ditty Bops" and they really got the ball rolling. You can listen to full tracks at their website. None of that 30 second sample crap. I can't even really describe their sound. It's retro and some of their tracks have a swing, ragtime feel to them. It's not for everyone, but I sure as hell enjoyed it. It was a very whimsical show.

Anyway, Nickel Creek were awesome. They did play a lot of their actual tracks but the show was also like a modern bluegrass and folk jam session. Chris Thile really rocks on his mandolin. I expected him to kneel down over it at some point and light it on fire. They all work together really well and the sound they produce is incredible. Their latest album "Why Should the Fire Die?" has some great tracks on it but you really have to see their show for the full experience. Their world-premiere cover of Britney Spear's "Toxic" was a treat for all. They really nailed every nuance of that song and a good time was had by all. In an unprecedented move, the band invited everyone up on stage for their second encore. The stage filled rather quickly so I was unable to participate. I'm still blown away by the fact that they would even attempt such a thing. Everything went acoustic at that point and they ended with their title track. Two thumbs...way up!
