Me And My TV
When people ask what type of HD-TV I have, I always hesitate to answer because when I say I have a rear-projection CRT, they usually turn their noses up and say something condesending like, "Oh those are nice." Everyone seems to be really stuck on plasma because they're flat and anyone who goes plasma, typically goes pretty small because they're a fortune. Well not me. I wanted a BIG hi-def TV and I wanted a nice one. After doing lots of research with service centers (I figure they're the ones with the best failure data), I finally decided on the HD-ILA Micro-display Television from JVC.
The D-ILA stand for Direct-drive Image Light Amplifier and is only available from JVC. So what's so special about it?
There are lots of technical reasons why I went with this particular television. Things like HD Range 75MHz Digital Super Detail (DSD), a user-replaceable lamp, a 10.95 million pixel natural progressive picture circutry and a 4-point color management system to name a few. Don't know what I'm talking about? Here's the details.
Theres more to it than flashy BS however. The HD-ILA is based on a reflective technology, but it utilizes LCOS pixels which require virtually no space between them. This also reduces that "screen door" effect found on larger TVs. It also uses three processors (one for each primary color) and uses a polarized beam splitter to combine them all. Here's a bit more research if you've made it this far.
I'm no elitist and I'm sure as hell not an expert. I know there's always something better on the horizon, but for the price, the size, the clarity and the quality...I think this TV is trully one of the best.

Having recently bought an HDTV myself I must say Joe your TV is the shit. Im pretty proud of my little set so far. Im waiting to get the HD set top box put in. Without the HD tuner the local channels look like pure crap. HBO and Skinemax look pretty good and progressive scan DVD's look ummm, ummm hot. If the HD tuner fixes up the local channels Ill be happy as a clam (till I get an Xbox 360 that is).
Dude I think you got an awesome TV too. I was having a playful argument with a buddy of mine in Canada on the chat yesterday and he thinks its SO UNFAIR that the US is shutting off the analog cable signal in 2009. I'm like, "Dude, it's called progress...why fund TWO signals so that some people can enjoy their clunky analog TVs a few years longer?" I say if they didn't buy lotto tickets for one month, they could afford a small HD TV from Wal-Mart. He says its unfair. I say upgrade or get dusted in the wake of the technology jet stream.
My wife and I will look at TVs in Best Buy or Circuit City from time to time, and I'm usually not very impressed. I never could put my finger on it until Joe mentioned screen-door effect. That hits the nail right on the head.
We were in Circuit City the other day and came across a Sony SXRD and we were both blown away. Incredible HD picture and amazing colors. They were showing footage from Hawaii that was on a HD demo disc, so I didn't think much of it.
The next day we were over by Ovation and decided to stop in. I was pretty impressed by some of the Plasma TVs and of course the SXRD they had on display. Once again, we were both blown away by the image. There's just no comparison when you put it next to DLP or LCD. They weren't very busy so I just sat and discussed TV technology with one of the guys that works there. He explained to me that Sony basically bought the HD-ILA technology from JVC and tweaked it to come up with SXRD. It was a very informative visit and I definitely came away with some Knowledge (with a capital K).
