Asteroid nearly misses Earth! What did you say? Wouldn't we see that coming?
An asteroid missed us by a mere 288,000 miles a couple weeks ago and no one saw it coming (or going, for that matter) until 4 days after it passed. Basically, anything coming from the direction of the sun falls within our "blind spot". 288K miles is only about 1.2 times the distance to the moon. That does NOT make me feel too comfortable. The government is busy funding research to find out if farting cows warm the atmosphere....you'd think they could send a couple of cameras up in that solar blind spot to prevent a possible extincion event.
